Help Keep Your Kids Safe This Summer In The Heat & Sun (Canada, US)

Sun Safety

With summer getting hotter and hotter every year and kids running around all over the place (I have NO idea how they do it!!)  It is extremely important to keep them safe in the heat and sun. These are just a few things that I do to ensure my daughter remains safe.

Sunscreen Tips

#1. Your child doesn’t burn so you don’t think they need it? WRONG the sun is extremely dangerous, they should always have their exposed skin protected at ALL times and with the HIGHEST protection you can find. I think the highest I have seen is 60.  I got 2nd degree burns from the sun last year in MARCH if you can believe it. That just shows how dangerous the sun is getting.

2. Always Apply Sunscreen Approx 1/2 hour before going in water.

3. Check to see if their lower back where their shirt meets their shorts is exposed when bending over as even brief periods of exposure can cause serious burning.

Hydration Tips

4. WATER, WATER, WATER!!! My daughter is not allowed to have any other form of drink outside in the heat. Water is the best way to keep your child safe from dehydration. Kids should always be encouraged to drink frequently when outside. Every 15 or so minutes call them over and get them to have a few sips at the very least. If they get to the point that they are really thirsty then they are already in the begining stages of dehydration, lets NOT even get there.

5. Kids tend to just keep going and going, and extreme heat doesn’t seem to change that. They need small breaks. Especially when they are outside for hours and hours at a time. Make sure you have them either in a well shaded area, or in the house for small breaks from the heat and to let their bodies cool down periodically.

Other Forms Of Protection

6. This is a pet peeve of mine, I see many children running around without a hat in the summer! NOT COOL!! I have seen the effects of sun stroke and believe me it is NOT nice! Make sure your child ALWAYS has a hat on.

7. So It is a really hot yucky day out there? Keep the kids hats wet on their head this will help keep them nice and cool. I know hats can make eveything seem hotter than it is so make sure to keep their hats/head wet.

8. SUNGLASSES!!! I am pretty sure you are thinking I am being extreme now but honestly I think sunglasses are just as important as any other form of sun protection as the sun can be very damaging to your eyes as well.

Remember, repeated unprotected exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays can cause skin damage, eye damage, immune system suppression, and skin cancer. It is said that kids up to the age of 18 get 50%- 80% of their lifetime sun exposure and we as parents are responsible to make sure they practice safe sun habits. The best way to teach sun safety is to NEVER waiver on the importance of protecting their skin and eyes, and to set a good example by following good sun safety habits ourselves.

Do you have some great tips for keeping your children safe in the summer? I would love to hear them :)
